Watch: The camera arcs around the person, who stays in the center: the face turns from one side to the other while the city behind slides the opposite way. The person doesn't turn; the camera does.A line-art demo that only illustrates the technique, not finished footage.

The technique comes first, followed by the scene, action, performance and duration. Paste it straight into a video model and swap in your own characters and plot.

The camera orbits the person in a half circle of about 90°; she stays in the center of the frame, the background shifts with parallax as the angle changes, and she does not turn. At the edge of a rooftop, a girl stands with her back to the city lights, the wind blowing her hair to one side. As the camera reaches her profile she looks down and flicks a lighter, which doesn't catch; she looks up, smiles and says, “Forget it.” 5 seconds, arc from left to right, front view in the first frame, no complex actions.
04

Common pitfalls

  • The face gradually warps or turns into someone else during the orbit. This is the most common failure.
  • Without an arc size you get a twitchy spin on the spot.
  • The background gets churned into mush.
05

Parameter tips

30–120° arc; 4–6 s; give the front view in the first frame; don't also ask the person to turn or do complex actions.
