Watch: The whole camera rises: the nearby bushes drop out of frame fastest, more and more ground comes into view, and the person becomes a small piece of the setting. Height buys information.A line-art demo that only illustrates the technique, not finished footage.

The camera rises vertically from low down to a high, top-down wide view, mainly vertical, with no rotation and no zoom. On the concrete floor of a construction site, a man in a hard hat squats eating a boxed lunch, his phone screen lit with an unread message. As the camera climbs it reveals a half-poured foundation and the walls around the site. He glances up at the sky and says to himself, “Three more months.” 5 seconds, a smooth rise to the top view, steady at the end, horizon level.
04

Common pitfalls

  • Writing “pull up” gets read as a zoom or a jump cut.
  • The horizon tilts during the move.
  • The height change is too small for the audience to notice.
05

Parameter tips

3–6 s; the height change covers 2–3 times the person's height; settle at the end.
