Watch: With the grid lines drawn, the subject moves from dead center to an intersection and the horizon falls on a third line. It no longer feels stiff, and the eye has somewhere to go.A line-art demo that only illustrates the technique, not finished footage.

The technique comes first, followed by the subject, scene, details and aspect ratio. Paste it straight into an image model and swap in your own subject.

Rule-of-thirds composition, the subject on the upper right intersection, space left on the left side where it faces, the horizon on the lower third line. Early morning on a grassland: a white horse stands on the crest of a slope on the right, looking back toward the mist and the rising sun on the left. 3:2, a clear, airy image, the horizon not across the middle.
04

Common pitfalls

  • The horizon falls right on the middle and splits the image in two.
  • The space is left behind the subject and feels cramped.
05

Parameter tips
