Fade out to black, hold for about half a second, then fade in to the next scene, a smooth transition with no other effects. Scene one: at a hospital bedside, an old man holds his grandson's hand and slowly closes his eyes, and the image fades to black; fade in on scene two: years later, the grown grandson tells his own child a story at the same window. 8 seconds, a full black frame, no dissolve.
04
Common pitfalls
- Fading every scene makes the whole film drag.
- Black held too briefly turns into a flicker.
05
Parameter tips
Hold black for 0.5 to 1 s; at most once per scene.
